Unconventional Friendships

Hello, and welcome to this week's Top 5 Wednesday post! This week's post is all about friendships. We may have missed National Best Friend's Day, which was on the 8th of June, but there is never a bad time to celebrate our friendships as they are all unique and special. I am sure we have all had at least one friendship where we can not help but think, "How did I become friends with you! We are so different!". What is so interesting is that sometimes these can be the most interesting friendships. I have learned so much from these kinds of friends, and they have taught me valuable life lessons. Therefore, for this week's prompt, we are considering our Top 5 Books that explore friendships between unlikely pairs. Where I cannot find friendships between unlikely pairs, I will focus on books with a strong element of friendship. However, today's post is all about friends! I  admit that many of these books often get on these lists but I have tried my best to make changes where I can. Let's get straight to it!

1. The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith

We start with the Strike series as Robin and Strike seem like a very unlikely pair to be friends as well as romantic partners. However, they are somehow friends and business partners, and the last book suggests that they may eventually become romantic partners. I really hope they do, but although there are several similarities, there are also many differences between them. It is clear from the books that Strike needs Robin in his life!

2. A Study in Chocolate by Amber Royer

The second book is about friendships and their part in people's lives. There are so many perfect examples of friendships in this book, but the friendships between Felicity and both Arlo and Logan can, at times, be strange. They can all seem like unlikely pairs, but they again all seem to get together to the point that Felicity has to pick whether she wants to start a relationship with Arlo or Logan. This series is a lovely example of what friendships and family are all about, so I would recommend it.

3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

In this book it is the friendship between Calpurnia and the Finch family which is shocking. This is because it would have likely been frowned upon to be friends with a black person during the times when this book is set, and I am led to believe that this part of America continues to be highly racist. It is great that the Finches don't let the opinions of others have an impact on who they are friends with and that they let Calpurnia educate them about the African American Community.

4. Phoenix by Ellie Simms

In Phoenix, Briana befriends another girl at the camp where they have been kidnapped just to later shoot her in the back, quite literally. This is unusual because not only Briana gave her friend a false sense of hope but you would not usually kill one of your friends. It may make the reader question whether they were ever friends or whether Briana befriended her friend for her own advantage.

5.  A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Again, this book is full of friendships. For instance, we have Alex and his droogs at the start of the book but his droogs soon seem to go against Alex and later become his worst enemy. Alex also befriends the author, having raped his wife many years previously, and this very nearly does not end well. This is such an interesting book from a social science perspective, looking particularly at the themes of crime and punishment within the book, but the same can be said about the theme of friendship, which is again a major feature of this book.

Anyway, that is all for this week's post, so I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing about it. Please do share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments below and explore the rest of this blog for other Top 5 Wednesday posts, as well as the various book reviews I have on offer. I look forward to next week's post!
