Fantasy

Hello, it is that time of the week again, so welcome to this week's Top 5 Wednesday post. This is also the last Top 5 Wednesday post of June 2024, which amazes me how quickly this month has gone by. At the time of writing I am also very happy as it finally feels like summer with the sun reaching some gorgeous temperatures at last! But let us get straight into the important stuff; this week's Top 5 Wednesday post is a genre feature, the genre being fantasy. I don't know how much fantasy I have read, so this will be a very interesting post. A quick Google search tells me that fantasy is literature which is set in an imaginary universe and often goes against our laws of nature. So, it invents something new that requires new rules. I will stick to books that are close to this definition, but I cannot make any promises. However, It is nice to see that this list has been taken over by public domain books this week, which dominate three out of the five places. But let's now get straight into my top 5 favourite fantasy books!

1. The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri

We start with the oldest book on the list, which was published in 1320, The Divine Comedy, which takes us on a journey through hell, purgatory and heaven. This must have taken quite a bit of imagination to write, but it was a great poem. This is probably most definitely one of my favourite fantasies, and I wouldn't mind reading it again. However, seeing The Divine Comedy re-written for a modern audience that reflects today's age would be amazing. The whole idea of an afterlife is based on fantasy and so this features some of the most significant fantasy themes on this list.

2. A Kidnapped Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum

We now come further towards the present day with another excellent public domain book, which was published in 1904. Now Christmas is full of fantasy in terms of Santa, flying reindeer, elves working in the factories and so on. It truly is such a magical period, even if it is a shame that it becomes slightly less magical and joyful in that period when one is no longer a child nor has children of one's own to celebrate this magical time with. Even still, this book features many areas of fantasy from Santa Cluase himself, reindeer flying through the night sky, Daemons of the Caves kidnapping Santa and elves delivering the presents to avoid disappointing the children. This is another good read I would recommend for the Christmas period!

3. Switch by A. S. King

This book is the newest on this list and really does come under fantasy as it is such an interesting and bizarre book. Not only does time stop, but the main character lives in a house where there are boxes built around a power switch that no one touches. Tru lives in box seven and eventually decides to flip the switch to see what happens. There is also the element of the story of how Tru is excellent at Javelin and performs well beyond what is expected of humans. I would recommend you check out my book review on this book and maybe even have a read of it yourself.

4. The Monkey's Paw by W. W. Jacobs

This is another short public domain book that was published in 1902. It is about a monkey's paw, which magically grants wishes. However, the family in this story soon discover that the wishes are not without consequences. This leads them to instantly regret their wishes, which include more money due to their financial situation. As well as fantasy, this is also a gothic and horror book, and it can definitely be said to meet the criteria for this genre as well and is very good at it.

5. From A Buick 8 by Stephen King

This is probably my least favourite book out of all the books on this list; I found it very boring when I first read it, largely due to a lot but nothing happening. This book is about a Buick Roadmaster, a car sitting in a shed in a state police barracks. The car appears to be some sort of a monster or something, but this is indeed a very confusing book. Nevertheless, it is definitely a fantasy due to this confusing nature and the car going against all natural laws and reasonable beliefs and knowledge.

That is all for this week. What a post this has been! Please do let me know in the comments below what your favourite fantasy books are, as they may be of interest to me!
