Hello, are you there?
Hello, and welcome to the first Top 5 Wednesday post for May 2024! Can you believe that we are now already 5 months into 2024! Time has gone by so fast, and I can't quite believe we are here so soon. Although, maybe the time has gone faster (that idea links into one of the Top 5 Wednesday Prompts later this month), because spring, the sun and, of course, the heat seem to have got badly lost, either time is going slower for Spring, or it has taken the wrong turning! I have been tortured by wind, rain, and cold weather rather than the weather one would expect from this time of the year; where is the heatwave I was promised? All I know is that I want the sun and the warmth, and I want it now! Anyway, I go slightly off-topic! Because of how spring is meant to be fully here and how all the nice flowers are meant to be in full bloom, we are starting the celebrations of this season with our Top 5 Favourite book covers, which have flowers as part of the cover design. Before we get into this week's post, I have had to bend the rules just slightly, but they still very much follow the spring theme, so I'm sure I will be excused! I seem to have said enough already, so let's get straight into this week's Top 5 Wednesday post!
1. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
We start this week's book with Lee's classic novel about a black man falsely accused of rape in Maycolm County, Alabama. It may be argued that the cover of this book is more symbolic of autumn or late summer rather than spring, but I think it could work either way. The cover in question features a lovely tree in full bloom, which really reminds me of spring and the new life around this time of the year, both with baby lambs running through fields of green grass during a nice, warm, sunny spring day, to all the trees and flowers getting their leaves and finally blooming. This cover very much reminds me of the good times, that being spring and summer, the sun and the heat!
2. 70% Dark Intentions by Amber Royer
We now travel just under 650 miles across America from Alabama to Galveston Island in Texas to meet with Felicity at her chocolate shop! Obviously, it is clearly a joy to meet up with Felicity for some lovely craft coffee and chocolate at her shop! But on the cover of this book, in her shop's preparation area, there seems to be a giant sunflower. Looking closer, it may be a painting, but I don't think that matters. Nothing says spring quite like a sunflower; I suppose the reason is in the name, the sun is out! Also, I can't think of anything better than being on Galveston Island in the spring when it is warm, with a cup of craft coffee and eating a load of chocolate whilst chatting with Felicity and her staff about all sorts, particularly books!
The more I think about how great a visit to Galveston Island would be, the more I wish Felicity and her chocolate shop weren't just fiction but a real place!
3. The Essential Social Skills Handbook for Teens by Richard Meadows
We now move on to some nonfiction in this book, all about developing self-confidence, overcoming anxiety, and expanding one's social network! Yes, this sounds like a good book, but it is also quite a creative book cover with so much included that different people would enjoy it. This includes gaming, music, coffee, sports, and messaging friends. But the cover also features some lovely-looking leaves, not the type of leaves that you find on a tree or an ordinary houseplant, but those giant leaves that just scream summer when you see them! With them being different colours, this makes this a particularly good book cover!
4. The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith
We now come back to fiction and the United Kingdom for one of Galbraith's excellent novels. This one may be pushing my luck for this week's post as the cover may suggest more autumn/winter time rather than spring and summer time but the cover does feature (mostly) green leaves, so I think we can allow it! Green is very much the colour of spring and summer; it reminds one of the good times of spring and summer. Therefore, one could say that because spring hasn't made it to me properly just yet, this book cover reminds me that I won't be waiting much longer for it! However, if I have to wait any longer for spring, I won't be too happy!
5. The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida
And finally, we finish on another non-fiction book and one which does not contain flowers but contains butterflies. Butterflies are very much associated with both spring and summer and even flowers, so I think this cover will also be allowed. This book is written by a non-verbal autistic boy who essentially answers questions about his autism. Indeed, it's a very good book if you're autistic, neurodiverse, studying, working, or having connections to psychology or in any healthcare setting. You are an interested individual or just anyone overall. Anyway, butterflies, flowers, and the sun; this is spring, and there is nothing to like about it. Probably worth mentioning that Higashida is from Japan, so somewhere where it is definitely much warmer than the United Kingdom.
That's all for this week's post, so thank you for reading; I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed writing it! Get in touch via the comments below; what are your favourite covers with flowers? What are you looking forward to the most about spring/summer? I would love to hear from you. In the meantime, before next week's post, please be sure to check out my previous Top 5 Wednesday posts, which can easily be found by clicking on the Top 5 Wednesday label, found at the bottom of this post or located around various areas of my blog. Please also feel free to read some of my book reviews, including reviews of the books I have mentioned above. I look forward to next week!

I completely agree that this year has flown by! I'm grateful that the heatwave hasn't come. I'm not one for the heat anyway, but with a 10 month old and a 5 year old I worry about keeping them cool 😂 I know that I am in the minority but I love cloudy cool days l. I feel like it's much nicer to be outside in them 😂 anyway I love the sound of 70% Dark Intentions. The other books and covers sound good too.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!

Thank you for your comment! Yes, that certainly is a problem as when the heat comes air conditioning just doesn't want to work! I thnk an ideal compromise would just be no rain and low twenties potenially!
Delete70% Dark Intentions like all the Bean to Bar Mystery series is really good, you get the murder mustery but you also feel part of Felicities family and community which cook some amazing sounding dishes with recipes on the companion site! I would definetly recommend.
