The Secret Barrister- Introduction: My Opening Speech

 Summary

This is the first part of the book which introduces us, readers, to the criminal justice system in the United Kingdom. We are introduced to the case of Mr Tuttle who claims a blind man with crutches started hitting him and The Secret Barrister is cross-examining Mr Tuttle in this part of the book. Towards the end of this case study, we see how Mr Tuttles Barrister is not the best he could be and praises the secret barrister for his good cross-examination.

The writer then switches the focus on himself introducing himself to the reader telling us what his job consists of and how essentially, he is just a barrister for those who turn up to court without their own lawyers. We learn a bit about his job as a Junior Barrister and what it consists off. We learn that this barrister is mainly involved in small cases like possible theft and does not work with the cases that we would normally see in the media.

The focus then finally changes on what the book is about and how the writer believes the criminal justice system is broken. It is at this point when he introduces us to his award-winning book 'Stories of the law and how it is broken', and we are told we will be following a case study which is based on the truth of real cases but the identities have been changed.
